Toenail fungal infection is, as its name suggests, caused by a fungus. Depending on how severe the infection is, a toenail fungal infection is often treated with the use of an anti-fungal cream or a prescription anti-fungal pill. In severe cases though, the removal of the infected toenail may be necessary, either through the surgical means or otherwise. However, toenail fungal infection can also be treated with the use of some of the most commonly used household items. They are not only easy to use but are as effective, too, with the pharmaceutical products sold to treat toenail fungus.
1. Olive Leaf Extract. Olive leaf extract is referred to as nature’s natural antibiotic, thanks to various studies that have confirmed its potency in terms of dealing not only with fungus but also protozoa, bacteria, virus, and protozoa, too. As a toenail fungal infection treatment, olive leaf extract does not only get rid of the fungus from the outside but also from the inside, too. Apart from killing the fungus, olive leaf extract also detoxifies the body, making it more resistant to many illnesses.
2. Probiotics. Another home treatment for toenail fungal infection that one can count on is probiotics. Probiotics is most abundant in the yogurt stacked in the fridge. So, how does probiotics deal with toenail fungus effectively? Well, it is because increasing the intake of probiotics can also mean the increase of the good bacteria in the body. This means increasing the body’s defense against the fungi that gives rise to various diseases or health disorders, including toenail fungus. If the number of good bacteria in the body is outnumbered by the fungi, a person can be prone to various diseases, such as candida yeast infection, which makes a person susceptible to various fungal infections, such as toenail fungal infection.
3. Borax Powder. Just like baking powder, borax powder can also be counted upon in eliminating many types of fungus, including the ones that cause toenail fungal infection. Apart from being an effective treatment against toenail fungus, borax powder can be relied upon in dealing with athlete’s foot, too. As a toenail fungal infection treatment, borax powder is usually mixed with baking soda and a little water to form a pasty mixture. After the feet and the infected toenail are washed, the paste is applied to the toenail and allowed to stay for, at least, 20 minutes before it is rinsed off. This procedure has to be done twice daily.
4. Mouthwash. Now, who says that mouthwashes can only be used to ensure a fresh-smelling breath and keep bad breath at bay? Mouthwashes can be used to treat toenail fungal infection, too! For instance, 30-50 ml of Listerine mixed in a cup of hot water can be a great solution where the infected toenail will be soaked for, at least, 30 minutes once a day. The antiseptic present in the mouthwash will eventually kill the fungus.
While it is true that home remedies for toenail fungal infections really work, they can be pricier than the OTC treatments in the long run. However, if one wants to go natural in the treatment of his toenail fungal infection, these home treatments can really be counted upon.
